ACTION: Call your Sheriff

From Indivisible Oregon...

**CALL TO ACTION**
Monday, March 6th
(Thanks to wall-of-us.org)
Last week, the Trump Administration gutted restrictions preventing the deportation of law-abiding undocumented immigrants. The Department of Homeland Security memos call for the removal of nearly all undocumented immigrants, tripling the number ICE agents, and stripping away due process and privacy protections. ICE agents have already begun conducting raids on churches and courthouses. Here in Oregon, there was a recent raid in Woodburn.
Trump needs cooperation to carry out his deportation agenda and local law enforcement has no legal obligation to comply. Sheriffs are elected officials who will respond to pressure. That means that the same strategies of direct engagement that we have been honing on our Members of Congress will work on them too!
Call your local sheriff (http://www.usacops.com/or/) and tell them to focus on safety and not deportation.
**ACTION 1: Call your Sheriff**
Sample script
“My name is [--] and I’m a constituent from [city], Oregon, zip code (--). I am calling to see what Sheriff [______]’s position is on supporting the Trump Administration’s policies targeting lawful undocumented immigrants. Who can I speak to in your office to ensure Sheriff [_______] receives my message?
[make sure you get to the right person]
Is Sheriff [____________] voluntarily making the decision to enforce Trumps new policy of targeting lawful undocumented immigrants? I wanted to make sure that the sheriff is aware that local law enforcement is not legally required to assist the federal government in enforcing federal law. In fact, the principle of Separation of Powers in the US Constitution makes it clear that the sheriff can decide whether or not to enforce federal law and policy. What is the Sheriff’s position on this?”
**ACTION 2: Comment below and tell us how it went!**
