ACTION: CAPITAL PUNISHMENT FOR DRUG DEALERS WILL NOT END OPIOD CRISIS

From Indivisible Oregon...

**CALL TO ACTION**

CAPITAL PUNISHMENT FOR DRUG DEALERS WILL NOT END OPIOID CRISIS
——————————————————————————
#OpioidCrisis
#DeathPenalty
#BigPharma

America’s in the throes of its deadliest drug overdose crisis, which began 20 years ago
•  in 2016 overdoses killed more Americans than entire Vietnam War, gun violence, HIV/AID ever did in a single year, and 2017 was worse
• 2/3 of 64,000 dying of overdoses in 2016 linked to prescribed or illegal opioids

The opioid crisis is extremely complicated. Experts caution that $100 billion over 5 years probably not sufficient. To solve it requires:
• Preventing new generations of users
• Making addiction treatment easier to access than opioids/heroin
• Addressing social/economic/environmental/psychological root causes

While Trump declared opioid epidemic a public health crisis, he’s provided no leadership, offered no funding, and expounded only simplistic solutions—like the death penalty for large scale drug dealers. He failed to mention, or seek punishment, for those who fueled this crisis—the pharmaceutical companies whose misleading marketing pushed doctors to overprescribe opiates. The almost $4 billion already appropriated is only drop in the bucket, and only piecemeal legislation pending in both houses.

Execution and incarceration won’t cure this epidemic. Instead, Congress must develop fully funded long-term strategy, focusing on prevention and treatment—not high mandatory or death sentences for drug dealers.

**ACTION 1: CALL BOTH SENATORS and YOUR REPRESENTATIVE**

SAMPLE SCRIPT for all except Walden
“My name is [--] and I’m a constituent from [city], Oregon [zip code]. I am very concerned that neither Congress nor Trump is seriously addressing the opioid crisis, and I’m appalled at Trump’s call for death sentences for large scale drug dealers, rather than punishment for the pharmaceutical companies that have fueled this crisis. I am calling to ask that the [Senator/Representative] work (1) to repeal the Ensuring Patient Access and Effective Drug Enforcement Act, which restricts DEA’s ability to discipline opioid distributors, and (2) to fully fund long-term solutions focusing on opioid prevention and treatment. Thank you.”

ACTION: PROTECT OUR VOTES

From Indivisible Oregon...

**CALL TO ACTION**
Thursday, March 29, 2018

PROTECT OUR VOTES
———————————————————————————
#SecureElections
#PaperBallots

Our system of representative democracy is under attack. The very legitimacy of our elections is threatened by the interference of hostile powers.  In 2016 Russian hackers launched cyberattacks and our government has done nothing to stop them.

Additionally, our voting machines are remarkably easy to compromise—as was demonstrated by hackers at the 2017 Defcon conference who breached variety of voting machines in under two hours.   And 20% of citizens cast paperless ballots on machines with no paper trails.

Last week, the Senate Intelligence Committee released a report on Russian interference in 2016,  with recommendations for securing elections. Significantly, it encourages states to transition to paper ballots.

The recently passed omnibus spending bill includes $380 million for securing digital election systems.  The Secure Elections Act, reintroduced in the Senate, provides funding for states both to change from paperless machines to ones with voter-verified paper ballots and to regularly audit  all elections.

With the midterms looming, there is no time to lose. Our Senators must push for speedy passage of the Secure Elections Act, which has bipartisan support, and demand full enforcement of sanctions against Russia.

It has neither neutralized future Russian interference nor ensured that every vote in this country is protected by a verifiable paper trail.  Please ask the Senator to push for speedy passage of S.2261, the Secure Elections Act, and to demand full enforcement of sanctions against Russia.  Thank you.”

ACTION: CONTAIN TRUMP’S WAR CABINET

From Indivisible Oregon...

**CALL TO ACTION**
Wednesday, March 28, 2018
——————————————————————————
Contain Trump’s War Cabinet
——————————————————————————
#IranDeal
#NorthKorea

Trump fired the cautious advisors leading the State Department and the National Security Council, and he is replacing them with extremists who echo the President’s desire to move forcefully against North Korea and Iran. Their support for “preventive war” and “preemptive strikes” will embolden Trump and risk two more wars.

•John Bolton, the incoming NSC advisor, has a history of manipulating intelligence to fit his warmongering views. In February, the Fox News personality said a first strike against North Korea is “perfectly legitimate.”

•Mike Pompeo, Trump’s choice for Secretary of State, wants to lower North Korea’s nuclear threat “by non-diplomatic means” and has alluded to assassinating Kim Jong-un.

Both view the deal that stopped Iran’s nuclear program as a disaster. Decertifying it would further distance the US from our allies. It would also destabilize the volatile region with armed conflicts likely to draw America in.

Bolton doesn’t need Senate confirmation, which he has failed in the past. But Pompeo does and his nomination should be blocked.

We demand our MOCs make themselves the loud voices of reason--in hearings, town halls, op-eds and speeches--warning that military action against Iran and North Korea would be international disaster.

ACTION: STOP THE CHAOS AND CONTAIN THIS WHITE HOUSE

From Indivisible Oregon...

**CALL TO ACTION**
Tuesday, March 27, 2018
———————————————————————————
STOP THE CHAOS AND CONTAIN THIS WHITE HOUSE
———————————————————————————
#TrumpThreatLevel
#TrumpRussia
#ProtectMueller
America deserves a White House free from chaos. Instead we have a president whose decisions are impulsive reactions to cable TV punditry. Our country suffers the results.
As Council on Foreign Relations’ President Richard Hass points out, Trump has put us closer to:
- War on foreign soil, by replacing Secretary of State Rex Tillerson with Mike Pompeo and National Security Advisor H. R. McMaster with John Bolton. Trump is assembling a war cabinet. Bolton advocates for first strikes against North Korea. Bolton and Pompeo support withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal.
-War on democracy, by firing Andrew McCabe and attacking Robert Mueller by name. In addition, the resignation of Trump’s lead lawyer further increases the likelihood that Trump will fire Mueller, sparking a constitutional crisis.
-War on trade, by slapping $50 billion of tariffs on China. China has retailed with tariffs of their own, sending the stock market down.
Adding to the above, Trump threatened to veto the spending bill over his wall and continued to show deference to Putin when he congratulated Putin on his “reelection” (despite being specifically instructed NOT to do so).
Congress must contain this White House. And if this Congress won’t, we must vote in one that will.

Thank you”

Progressives are not stupid and evil. Conservatives are not racists and misogynists. Our fellow Americans who disagree with us are not our enemies. They are our fellow Americans who differ with us. And we should not put up with politicians, on the left or right, who can’t seem to understand this."
