ACTION: FIGHT RUSSIAN ELECTION HACKING

From Indivisible Oregon...

**CALL TO ACTION**
Wednesday, January 31, 2018
————————————————————————————
FIGHT RUSSIAN ELECTION HACKING:
DEMAND TRUMP OBEY THE LAW
————————————————————————————
#UnhackTheVote
#TrumpRussia
#RussianSanctions

“The President decides to ignore that law.  Folks, that is a constitutional crisis”
– Senator McCaskill.

Responding to Russia’s 2016 attacks undermining our elections, Congress did a rare thing in this age. It passed a bill almost unanimously, with a 517-5 vote: the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act. Donald Trump signed it into law. The bill punishes Russia for past hacking and discourages future hacking, by:
• maintaining already-imposed Obama administration sanctions
• identifying Russian entities to be penalized with new sanctions by 10/1/17
• imposing sanctions by 1/29/18

Yet Trump refuses to follow the law and implement sanctions.
• He released minimal list three weeks after 10/1 deadline AND after GOP pressure
• He ignored the 1/29 deadline for imposing sanctions on “oligarchs” close to Putin’s government; instead he released a list of Russian government officials, plus 96 “oligarchs” named by Forbes magazine as Russian billionaires
• He announced sanctions are unnecessary, ignoring that the law requires sanctions on those doing “significant” business with people linked to Russia’s defense/intelligence agencies

Monday we called to protect Mueller and our elections. We still have work to do. Future elections will be compromised unless we make it too difficult for Russia to interfere. We must pressure Trump to follow the law by censuring him AND blocking nominees until he does (as Senator McCain has suggested).

**ACTION1: CALL YOUR MEMBERS OF CONGRESS**
(Leave a message if you can’t get through.)

SAMPLE SCRIPT FOR WYDEN AND MERKLEY
“My name is [--] and I’m a constituent from [city], Oregon [zip code]. I am outraged that Trump has refused to impose sanctions on Russia. Congress must take all steps necessary to force Trump to carry out his constitutionally required responsibilities and to ensure that future elections are free from Russian hacking.  Specifically: I’m asking the Senator to censure him and withhold confirmation of his nominees until he complies with the Russian sanctions law. Thank you.”

SAMPLE SCRIPT FOR ALL REPRESENTATIVES
“My name is [--] and I’m a constituent from [city], Oregon [zip code]. I am outraged that Trump has refused to impose sanctions on Russia. I am urging my Representative to immediately call on Trump to carry out his constitutionally required responsibilities and to agree to censure him if he fails to comply. Congress must take all steps necessary to ensure that future elections are free from Russian hacking. Thank you.”

**ACTION 2: SHARE WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY**

Share this post with friends and family. Help them call their Congressional delegation and urge them to censure Trump for his refusal to comply with the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act. For their Senators: Ask them to promise to withhold confirming his nominees until he agrees to comply with all of CAATSA’s terms.

ACTION: PROTECT DREAMERS AND TPS HOLDERS

From Indivisible Oregon...

**CALL TO ACTION**
Tuesday, January 30, 2018
——————————————————————————————
PROTECT DREAMERS AND TPS HOLDERS

#ImmigrationReform
#DREAMActNow
#SaveTPS

This is a dangerous time to put immigration policy to a vote. The Trump Administration wants to sharply cut legal immigration and exclude groups based on religion and race. Congressional leadership has repeatedly broken promises on past legislative deals. DREAMers and Temporary Protected Status (TPS) holders wait in agonizing limbo.

Bipartisan groups in both Houses are working on plans to give eventual legal status to 1.8 million DACA recipients and DACA eligible, plus over 300,000 TPS holders. But both plans would disrupt family reunification and build up DHS deportation capacities.

Even if the Senate bill passes, the House won’t necessarily consider immigration legislation without the President's support, which is nonexistent. Meanwhile, Trump’s clock runs out on DREAMers in five weeks.

To overcome these impediments, we must fight for DREAMers and TPS holders by
--telling MoCs we want an immigration bill that 1) provides permanent legal status to DREAMers and TPS holders, 2) supports family reunification, and 3) keeps families already here intact
--supporting immigration advocates
--calling friends in other states, red and blue, so all MoCs hear from their constituents.

We are fighting for America’s identity. Let Congress know in no uncertain terms that we stand with immigrants, Indivisible.

**ACTION 1: CALL YOUR SENATORS and REPRESENTATIVE**
(Leave a message if you can’t get through.)
SAMPLE SCRIPT FOR WYDEN, MERKLEY, BONAMICI, BLUMENAUER, DEFAZIO AND SCHRADER:
“My name is [--] and I’m a constituent from [city], Oregon [zip code]. I am calling to ask [Name] to fight for an immigration bill that: 1) provides permanent legal status to DREAMers and TPS holders, 2) keeps families together, 3) allows people to immigrate regardless of race. Thank you.”

SAMPLE SCRIPT FOR WALDEN:
“My name is [--] and I’m a constituent from [city], Oregon [zip code]. I am calling to insist that Rep Walden support an immigration bill that 1) provides permanent legal status to DREAMers and TPS holders, 2) keeps families together, 3) allows people to immigrate regardless of race. Trump’s proposal shames this country and should be opposed by everyone, regardless of party. Thank you.”

This week's Americans of Conscience Action Checklist is here.

Contact elected officials here.

Tell Your Members of Congress to stand up for our country and protect the Mueller investigation.

•  Demand a humane immigration policy:  Despite widespread national and Congressional bipartisan support for the Dreamers, some GOP members of Congress and the President are using immigrants to score political points. They need to develop a reasonable immigration policy, including a path to citizenship for DACA recipients.

•  Demand full long-term funding:
for the Children's Health Insurance Program, aid to post-hurricane Puerto Rico (an unincorporated territory of the US), Secure Elections Act (S.2261), the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, DREAMers, National Parks, the NIH, Medicaid, and Medicare.

"We still do not know what the budget caps are for defense and non-defense programs.  The majority party wants to massively increase defense spending while simultaneously reducing funding for housing, education, research, health care, and so on."
- - Representative Michael Capuano, MA

They won't know what you want if you don't tell them.

INCO IN ACTION
I want to send a shout out and big thank you to our Get Out the Vote (GOTV) Team for Measure 101. We covered a lot of ground and made a lot of calls. And it passed!

Thanks to Sharon, Laura, Debby, Kay, Tiffiny, Eric, and Ellen for spending time knocking on doors.  Here in Seaside my best estimate is that we knocked on 450 - 500 doors.  Thanks to Cathey and Joyce for helping with the “Sorry I missed you.....” personalized messaging on the flyers.

Thanks to Laura, Debby, Kay, Ken, Tiffiny, Ellen, Carmen and Eric for spending Sunday afternoon calling voters countywide. We had an amazing afternoon.  We made 457 calls, had 103 committed YES votes, and got 46% of the turf list called in just a couple of hours.  Thanks to Andy for keeping us supplied with turf lists and answering my many questions.

Measure 101 was INCO Seaside/Gearhart Community Group’s  first effort to organize a GOTV effort.  We learned a lot, didn’t we?

-- From Bebe Michel, co-chair of INCO's Measure 101 Campaign

Last night, Oregonians voted resoundingly to protect Medicaid expansion across the state!
More than a dozen Indivisible groups from across the state joined the YES For Healthcare coalition comprised of local labor unions and allied advocacy organizations to fight for Medicaid.
YES won by knocking on doors, placing phone calls, and talking to our friends and family about why Medicaid matters. Indivisibles participated in 150+ phone- and text-banking shifts, 300+ canvassing shifts, and knocked on over 12 THOUSAND doors to help get out the vote!
With midterm elections fast approaching this November, it's important to keep up the momentum, build networks across the state, and help elect progressive candidates up and down the ballot!

INSIGHTS
I find three simple commandments I can’t bring myself to dismiss.
The first, and most obvious, is this: Treat every poisoned word as a promise….  Take the haters at their word, and assume the worst is imminent.

You should treat people like adults, which means respecting them enough to demand that they understand the consequences of their actions. Explaining away or excusing the actions of others isn’t your job. ….remember that what matters now isn’t analysis: It’s survival.

Which leads me to the third principle, the one hardest to grasp: Refuse to accept what’s going on as the new normal. Not now, not ever…..This isn’t a political contest—it’s a moral crisis…..The only thing that matters now is the simple moral truth: This isn’t right.

ACTION: PROTECT OUR ELECTIONS

From Indivisible Oregon...

**CALL TO ACTION**

————————————————————————————
PROTECT OUR ELECTIONS AND MUELLER FROM ATTACKS
————————————————————————————
#MuellerInvestigation
#UnhackTheVote
#TrumpRussia

Russia’s 2016 propaganda attack aimed to promote Trump’s candidacy and undermine faith in US elections. Russian hackers also targeted 21 state voting systems. The 2018 election is at risk.

Trump has minimized Russia’s role and left unaddressed the vulnerabilities Russia exploited by
• dismissing the Russia investigation as a “witch hunt” and “fake news”
• pressuring FBI Director Comey to stop investigating campaign aide/National Security Advisor Michael Flynn’s contacts with Russia
• firing Comey
• pressuring intelligence officials to state that there was no collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign

We now know that Trump ordered Special Counsel Robert Mueller to be fired but backtracked amid internal protest. Mueller must finish his investigation and detail the extent of Russian attacks and, possibly, the Trump campaign’s collusion. Two bipartisan bills would protect Mueller from dismissal.

While protecting Mueller, we must protect the vote. One in four voters use vulnerable electronic voting machines, which can be hacked in seven minutes. The Senate’s bipartisan bill (S.2261) would help states move to paper ballots--the most secure voting method.

Our MoCs must safeguard both Mueller and our voting systems against attacks that, if successful, would provoke a political and (potentially) constitutional crisis.

ACTION: SAVE OUR DEMOCRACY

From Indivisible Oregon...

**CALL TO ACTION**
Friday, January 26, 2018
————————————————————————————
SAVE OUR DEMOCRACY:
OPPOSE EXTREMIST CIRCUIT COURT NOMINEES
————————————————————————————
#ProtectOurCourts
#NoExtremistJudges

Our country is lurching from one crisis to another, and all eyes are on struggles to protect DREAMERS, fund disaster relief, and pass a budget that provides for the needs of the American people. All of these heat-of-the-moment issues require our immediate attention.

Simultaneously, Trump and his Senate GOP allies are jamming through confirmation of extreme right-wing judges, doing long-term damage to our future as a functioning democracy. We must take this threat seriously, even though protecting our courts may not inspire the same degree of urgency.
Because the Supreme Court takes so few cases, Circuit Courts are often courts of last resort. Trump’s 12 appointees (7 without judicial experience) are hostile to voting rights, women’s rights, same-sex marriage, consumer protection, disability rights, workers’ rights, environmental protection, limiting executive authority.

Packing the courts with hard-right, ideological, and even unqualified judges—like Kyle Duncan (5th Cir.) and David Stras (8th Cir), whose nominations were just sent to Senate floor— puts our rights/freedoms at risk.

Legislation can be reversed, but judges serve for life. So, call your Senators and demand they oppose these confirmations, bringing Senate business to a halt for all but mainstream nominees.

(or leave a voice mail after hours)

SAMPLE SCRIPT
“My name is [--] and I’m a constituent from [city], Oregon [zip code]. I am very concerned about the extreme right-wing judges being confirmed for membership on the Circuit Courts. I appreciate the Senator speaking out on this issue. I would like him to oppose nominees Kyle Duncan (5th Circuit) and David Stras (8th Circuit) who will put our rights and freedoms at risk for years. And I am asking him to do everything in his power to convince Senate colleagues to use all weapons available, including bringing Senate business to a halt, until Trump agrees to choose nominees with bipartisan credentials. Thank you.”
————————————————————————————
**ACTION 2: SHARE WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY**
Share this post with friends and family. Help them call their Senators to explain the seriousness of this assault on the federal Circuit Courts, which are usually litigants’ courts of last resort, and to ask them for a promise to use all weapons available to block Trump’s most recent ultra conservative judicial nominees—Kyle Duncan for the 5th Circuit and David Stras for the 8th Circuit—until Trump agrees to send judges with bipartisan credentials.

ACTION: ELECTIONS MATTER: PROTECT THE 2020 CENSUS

From Indivisible Oregon...

**CALL TO ACTION**

ELECTIONS MATTER: PROTECT THE 2020 CENSUS
————————————————————————————
#Protect2020Census

Upset about the DREAM act and Medicaid work requirements? Concerned that transgendered patients will be denied healthcare? Losing sleep over the Paris Climate accords? Nervous about possible war with North Korea? Then call our MoCs to protect the 2020 census and our election process.

Every decade the census is used to determine Congressional districts and government resource allocation. The Trump administration is doing its best to politicize the census and tilt the results.

The House and Senate Appropriations Committees have underfunded the census by billions - which will suppress the voting power of minorities.

Thomas Burnell has been nominated to lead the census.  Burnell has little experience and has testified in support of gerrymandering.  Burnell is currently serving in a Deputy position that does not need Senate confirmation; however, his new position as Director does.

A politicized Justice Department made a formal request to add a question regarding citizenship to the census. This will decrease response rates, which puts accurate Congressional representation at risk, and will short change vulnerable populations when it comes to government funding.

An inaccurate, underfunded census will cause lasting damage to the democratic process, our voting rights and domestic federal funding.  Our Members of Congress must insist on a fair and nonpartisan census.

**ACTION 1: CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVE and OUR SENATORS**
(Leave a message if you can’t get through.)

SAMPLE SCRIPT
“My name is [--] and I’m a constituent from [city], Oregon [zip code]. I am very worried that an in inaccurate underfunded census will damage our democracy.  I ask that the Rep/Senator 1) oppose Thomas Burnell to lead the Census Bureau 2) call for the Commerce Secretary NOT to add a question about citizenship to the census, and 3) do all he/she can to make sure the census is adequately funded. Thank you.”
