BE INSPIRED
In these fraught times, INCO recommends this stirring video by Ken Burns on PBS about the Statue of Liberty - what inspired her, how she was built, who made her happen. It's a lovely reminder of why we and other pro-democracy activists around the world continue to do this challenging and necessary work.

PRESIDENT BIDEN'S ANNOUNCEMENT
"It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and focus solely on fulfilling my duties as president for the remainder of my term."
-- President Joe Biden, July 21, 2024. His entire statement is

"It’s up to us. No more squabbling. No more dissension. Organize. Donate. Get behind our party and our candidate and work to win."

ELECT ANDY DAVIS AS STATE REPRESENTATIVE

“My interest in running for this race is relatively simple: I think it’s important that the Democrats in the district and left-wing independents have a choice on the ballot.”

Andy Davis was selected as the Democratic nominee for state House District 32 on Thursday night. The Astoria city councilor will face state Rep. Cyrus Javadi, a Tillamook MAGA Republican, in the November election.

Davis described himself as pro-choice, pro-union and an advocate for housing. Davis works as an analyst for the Oregon Health Authority specializing in health care,

 PROJECT 2025: THE GOP'S ANTI-DEMOCRACY BLUEPRINT

No climate research, no free weather forecasts
“The preponderance of its climate-change research should be disbanded," says the Project 2025 document. Its backers also plan to end free weather reports and all but dissolve the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Read more in this July 16th Atlantic article by Zoe Schlanger.

• "It’s the end of public education as we know it."
Project 2025 plans to "end the Department of Education. A big part of its work is to guarantee equal access to quality education. Project 2025 calls for increased privatization of education and an end to programs related to diversity of LGBTQ+ youth." Other goals: more school vouchers, eliminate Head Start, allow public funding of religious education.
-- Joyce Vance,
Civil Discourse, July 18, 2024

• "Project 2025's extreme vision for the West"
Among other jaw-dropping plans, Project 2025 calls for
• Expanding oil and gas lease sales onshore and offshore (p.522);
• Opening large parts of Alaska to oil and gas exploration and development (pp. 523, 524);
• Halting the ongoing review of the federal coal-leasing program

INCO INSIGHTS
“For the great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie - deliberate, contrived, and dishonest, but the myth - persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic. We enjoy the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.”

7-15-24 Newsletter

INCO applauds President Biden for his statement about the attack against Donald Trump:
"There’s no place for this kind of violence in America. We must unite as one nation to condemn it."
"Whoever is to blame for the attempted killing of Donald Trump is beside the point.  The shooting of Trump should be condemned.  Gun violence should be condemned.  There is something deeply wrong with America right now.  Trump was a victim today, but we are all the victims of the political violence that has proliferated in rhetoric and now, reality.  The political atmosphere that birthed this attempt on a former president’s life has infected us all.  If it is allowed to continue, we are doomed."
-- Lucian Truscott IV,
 Substack newsletter, July 13, 2024
INSIGHTS FROM THE PAST
INCO recommends historian Timothy Snyder's fascinating July 14 newsletter about political violence. He shares his "thoughts about where we are, based on assassinations during the interwar period, the 1920s and 1930s. It is distant enough that perhaps we can attend to the examples without too much emotion, and yet close enough to be useful."
"WE HAVE ONE JOB....TO BEAT DONALD TRUMP."
-- President Biden's July 8 entire letter to Congressional Democrats is here.

"So, yes, we will stop Trump. But we will do it with ballots, not bullets."

GOOD NEWS FOR DEMOCRACY
INCO recommends Democracy Docket for its informative newsletters and website.
 PROJECT 2025: THE GOP'S ANTI-DEMOCRACY BLUEPRINT
"The crucial thing to understand about Project 2025 is that it is not small-government conservatism. It is big-government authoritarianism. While some agencies – the Department of Education and Department of Commerce, for example – would be eliminated, most would be pressed into service to create a Christian Nationalist state in which any non-Christian (or non-conservative-Christian) is rendered a second-class citizen."
-- Jay Michaelson,
 The Forward, July 11, 2024
INDIVISIBLE'S WARNING
"If Trump wins and Republicans control Congress, here are just a few things they plan to do:
  • Fire thousands of government employees and install Trump loyalists
  • Dismantle the Department of Education, turn federal education funding into religious school vouchers, and end civil rights protections
  • Eliminate the National Weather Service
  • Ban abortion and instruct the FDA to reverse its approval of life-saving drugs like mifepristone and emergency contraception
  • End carbon emissions rules and give free reign to big polluters from the oil, gas, and petrochemical industries
  • Abolish same-sex marriage and other LGBTQI+ rights
  • Privatize Medicare
  • And begin mass deportations of millions of people

"Speaker Johnson was one of the key players in the attempt to overturn the 2020 election – and he will do everything in his power to turn Trump's extremist wish list into law.

"Project 2025 will essentially make our country an autocratic regime at odds with everything the United States embodies – freedom, opportunity, and democracy. It is an outright power grab intent on destroying the separation of powers and undermining checks and balances in government."
