7-15-24 Newsletter

INCO applauds President Biden for his statement about the attack against Donald Trump:
"There’s no place for this kind of violence in America. We must unite as one nation to condemn it."
"Whoever is to blame for the attempted killing of Donald Trump is beside the point.  The shooting of Trump should be condemned.  Gun violence should be condemned.  There is something deeply wrong with America right now.  Trump was a victim today, but we are all the victims of the political violence that has proliferated in rhetoric and now, reality.  The political atmosphere that birthed this attempt on a former president’s life has infected us all.  If it is allowed to continue, we are doomed."
-- Lucian Truscott IV,
 Substack newsletter, July 13, 2024
INSIGHTS FROM THE PAST
INCO recommends historian Timothy Snyder's fascinating July 14 newsletter about political violence. He shares his "thoughts about where we are, based on assassinations during the interwar period, the 1920s and 1930s. It is distant enough that perhaps we can attend to the examples without too much emotion, and yet close enough to be useful."
"WE HAVE ONE JOB....TO BEAT DONALD TRUMP."
-- President Biden's July 8 entire letter to Congressional Democrats is here.

"So, yes, we will stop Trump. But we will do it with ballots, not bullets."
-- Jay Kuo,
Status Kuo on Substack, July 14, 2024

WRITE LETTERS TO VOTERS IN OREGON
Letters to Voters from Vote Forward has added CD-05. INCO members can help us Flip the House by working an Oregon campaign! You and other volunteers send heartfelt handwritten letters to unregistered and low-propensity voters encouraging them to participate in our democracy. The letters have been shown to significantly boost voter turnout.
GOOD NEWS FOR DEMOCRACY
INCO recommends Democracy Docket for its informative newsletters and website.
 PROJECT 2025: THE GOP'S ANTI-DEMOCRACY BLUEPRINT
"The crucial thing to understand about Project 2025 is that it is not small-government conservatism. It is big-government authoritarianism. While some agencies – the Department of Education and Department of Commerce, for example – would be eliminated, most would be pressed into service to create a Christian Nationalist state in which any non-Christian (or non-conservative-Christian) is rendered a second-class citizen."
-- Jay Michaelson,
 The Forward, July 11, 2024
INDIVISIBLE'S WARNING
"If Trump wins and Republicans control Congress, here are just a few things they plan to do:
  • Fire thousands of government employees and install Trump loyalists
  • Dismantle the Department of Education, turn federal education funding into religious school vouchers, and end civil rights protections
  • Eliminate the National Weather Service
  • Ban abortion and instruct the FDA to reverse its approval of life-saving drugs like mifepristone and emergency contraception
  • End carbon emissions rules and give free reign to big polluters from the oil, gas, and petrochemical industries
  • Abolish same-sex marriage and other LGBTQI+ rights
  • Privatize Medicare
  • And begin mass deportations of millions of people

"Speaker Johnson was one of the key players in the attempt to overturn the 2020 election – and he will do everything in his power to turn Trump's extremist wish list into law.

"Project 2025 will essentially make our country an autocratic regime at odds with everything the United States embodies – freedom, opportunity, and democracy. It is an outright power grab intent on destroying the separation of powers and undermining checks and balances in government."

HOW TO STOP FASCISM
Yes, we CAN keep our democracy if each of us persists in defending our freedoms. Noted historian Timothy Snyder presents five basic steps we must do. Snyder has extensively studied and written about authoritarian countries, including his book, ON TYRANNY: TWENTY LESSONS FROM THE TWENTIETH CENTURY. INCO recommends his books and following him on Substack and other media.

Learn more about these five steps in Snyder's
July 5 Substack newsletter, Thinking about....
1. Voting matters.
2.   Coalitions are necessary.
3.  Conservatives should be conservative.
4.  Big business should support democracy.
5.  Citizens should not obey in advance.
OUR FREEDOM TO CHOOSE
"Our freedom to choose to be political or apolitical has been taken. Powerful people are currently intent on taking all of our freedoms, step by step, minute by minute. The Supreme Court of The U.S. is legislating from the bench, and has violated the Constitution. The SCOTUS has just made the President of the U.S. an omnipotent dictator.

"We must always protect our freedoms by preventing any extremist from stepping into power, most critically until this can be reversed. Call for action now from our elected officials.

"It is foolish to dream that leaders will govern themselves."
-- Ken Potter, INCO Leadership Team

"THE DELAWARE RIVER IS NOT RUNNING BACKWARDS"*

"Buck up.  We live in the best country in the world.  We are good people.  There are more of us than there are of them.  This isn’t over by a longshot.  We shall overcome.

"I know that optimism is not a plan, but pessimism isn’t either, and it has the side effect of making you feel bad."
-- Lucian Truscott IV, Substack, July 7, 2024

JOYCE VANCE'S PROJECT 2025 STUDY GROUP
Week 3: The Stop Project 2025 Task Force on Capital Hill

"The more people understand about Project 2025, the more they realize Trump can’t be permitted back in the White House. Trump knows it too. That’s why he’s suddenly denying any connection to it."
-- Joyce Vance, Civil Discourse, July 5, 2024

For inspiration and information, read Joyce's
interview with US Representative Jared Huffman, who represents California’s Second Congressional District, which spans the North Coast of the state from the Golden Gate Bridge to the Oregon border. Among other roles in Congress, he is the founder of the Stop Project 2025 Task Force on Capitol Hill. The task force includes key Members of Congress, other Democratic groups, and more than a dozen well-known pro-democracy advocacy groups.

"Raising awareness about Project 2025 is critical to our country’s future. I hope you’ll share this and other pieces about Project 2025 as widely as possible."
-- Joyce Vance,
Civil Discourse, July 4, 2024
