8-29-2022 Newsletter

-- Felipe Galindo, newyorker.com, August 24, 2022
"At the very minimum, this situation represents a major breach of national security. Do we really believe that any other citizen of this country, which is who post-presidency Trump is, would be walking free if found in possession of these documents?"
-- Dan Rather, journalist,
Substack newsletter, August 26, 2022

"We have to wonder, who else now knows the secrets designed to keep Americans safe? Multiple news stories during Trump’s presidency noted that even then, Mar-a-Lago was notoriously insecure. And, unthinkable though it should be but sadly is not, what if secret documents have already been given or sold into the hands of foreign actors whose interests conflict with ours?"
-- Heather Cox Richardson, historian,
Substack newsletter, August 26, 2022

WE MUST HELP GOOD PEOPLE AND POLICIES WIN
"I have mentioned PostcardsToVoters.org before here. Volunteers across the country recently handwrote 204,000 postcards to Democrats in Kansas to ask them to vote NO on the confusing ballot amendment that would have gutted choice in Kansas. Then volunteers wrote 53,000 reminder postcards to Minnesota Democrats to GOTV for Jeff Ettinger in Special Election in a tough district. He shockingly lost by only a few points, improving his chances for prevailing in November. We just got done writing for Pat Ryan's Special Election this Tuesday. In September, we will start writing for major races all over the country.

HELP WANTED! It's easy to join or restart with
PostcardsToVoters.org! Just text "join" or "hello"to 484-275-2229, or write an email to Join@TonytheDemocrat.org. PTV postcards can be written and mailed from any location in the USA. All you need to get started are postcards and stamps!"

SUPPORT PRO-DEMOCRACY CANDIDATES
STOP ELECTION DENIERS
"And yet, the Big Lie that Trump won the 2020 election is still spreading. Amy Gardner in the Washington Post reports that 54 out of 87 Republican nominees in the states that were battlegrounds in 2020 are election deniers. Had they held power in 2020, they could have overturned the votes for Biden and given the election to Trump. In the 41 states that have already winnowed their candidates, more than half the Republicans—250 candidates in 469 contests—claim to believe the lie that Trump won in 2020."

IN BRIEF: INFLATION REDUCTION ACT

On August 12, the House of Representatives passed the Inflation Reduction Act, a sweeping bill that will invest more than $430 billion in climate change and extended subsidies for the Affordable Care Act. It will raise about $737 billion over the next ten years by allowing Medicare to negotiate drug prices, adequately staffing the Internal Revenue Service after years of cuts so it can catch people cheating on their taxes, and raising the tax rate on rich corporations to require them to pay a minimum of 15%.

The vote was 220 to 207, along party lines, although the measures in the bill are widely popular. Historian Heather Cox Richardson provided this information in Friday's Substack newsletter.

COULD OHIO HAPPEN IN OREGON?
Oregon voters can stop extremists from running our state. Check out this New Yorker podcast and New Yorker article about Ohio's extremist legislature created by gerrymandering. It's passing controversial legislation opposed by most Ohioans. It's a sobering look at extremist legislators taking over when voters don't pay attention.
CANDIDATES AT COIN MEETING
Please note that our second August COIN meeting has been moved to Tuesday August 23 at 7 pm. COIN-endorsed candidates, Tina Kotek for governor, and Christina Stephenson, for Labor Commissioner, will be our guests at this meeting.  Use the same link to register and submit your questions for these candidates.
Warrenton Indivisibles Carmen, Pat, Kathi, Carrie, Bob , and Kat (not shown) cleaned up Harbor Drive on Saturday. They haven't found any of the classified, top secret documents Trump stole from the US government, but they'll keep looking.
