BACKGROUND:
There is an crisis at our southern border. Not the sinister fantasy Trump has fabricated for his base, but the humanitarian crisis he caused by using immigrants as political props.
This administration advocates inhumane treatment of immigrants believing it will deter those who are escaping violence, poverty and political instability from seeking safety for themselves and their families in this country.
Hundreds of families are still being separated. Children are suffering trauma from separation and this emotional, physical and sexual abuse will have lifelong consequences. DHS Secretary Nielsen calls safeguards for detained children “another dangerous ‘pull’ factor” attracting immigrants and seeks to deport minors more quickly.
Meanwhile, Trump wants to punitively cut U.S. aid to Honduras, Guatemala and San Salvador, cutting funds used to address the very problems that asylum seekers are fleeing. He is threatening to close the border, halting all trade, which would inflict hardship on both sides. And he has ordered the pentagon to divert $1 billion to fund the border wall, his ultimate political prop.
