BACKGROUND:
We need the full Mueller report. So far, we have only Attorney General William Barr’s four-page summary, which Trump then re-summarized as “ . . . total and complete EXONERATION.”
Barr is now redacting portions of the report and says everyone can read it by mid-April. But a report censored by a Trump appointee will not rebuild trust in government.
The Mueller report is essential for many reasons.
- It’s urgent because the report details Russia’s attack on the 2016 elections. Every day Congress lacks that information makes the 2020 elections more vulnerable.
- It’s essential to answer why the Trump campaign allowed help from one of our foremost adversaries rather than report Russian overtures to law enforcement.
- It allows the House leadership to do what Republican Senate leadership has refused to do for two years – to hold the president accountable when he undermines the rule of law.
House Judiciary Chair Jerry Nadler wrote yesterday, “If President Trump’s behavior wasn’t criminal, then perhaps it should have been.”
Our democracy is anchored by the truth. But President Trump undermines democracy with his rain of lies and intentional misstatements – 9,451 at last count. If we allow ourselves to become unmoored from facts, we fall vulnerable to the unscrupulous and the corrupt.
Demand the report now.
