What happens when the president doesn’t set the right “tone at the top,” disregards ethical norms (including releasing his tax returns) and refuses to divest from his business?
- Trump reaps direct financial gain from his businesses, which are patronized by people/organizations seeking to curry favor
- Trump’s son-in-law and aide, Jared Kushner, gets millions in loans after White House meetings with the lenders
- Multiple cabinet members misuse public money by:
o routinely flying first class
o misusing government aircraft on unnecessary flights
o buying extravagant furnishings for their offices
o flying spouses on junkets
- Aides Kellyanne Conway and Kushner violate the Hatch Act, by using their official positions for political work
- Trump’s company orders Presidential Seals installed on his golf courses!
- Trump’s son-in-law and aide, Jared Kushner, gets millions in loans after White House meetings with the lenders

Trump has called US laws against bribery “horrible” and told Secretary of State Tillerson that they unfairly penalize US businesses. Maybe that is why Trump’s businesses have taken such a cavalier approach to them.
Corruption is a national security risk; it exposes our leaders to secret foreign influence and public shame. We demand that Congress investigate the extent to which our leaders’ corrupt behavior threatens our nation.
