FIGHT FOR A SPENDING BILL THAT BUILDS FAMILIES AND COMMUNITIES

#GovernmentShutDown
This week, Congress will debate a $1.3 trillion spending bill, which may be the last must-pass legislation before the midterms. The bill will need the votes of nine Democrat senators to avoid a government shutdown, which is set to happen at 12:01 am Saturday. So compromise will be essential.
How are we to assess the bill’s diverse components, which range from extending a tax break for Starkist Tuna to defunding Planned Parenthood? About 100 “poison pills” have been attached as riders and Trump has his own. He’s threatened to veto the bill if it provides funding for a tunnel between NY and NJ.
Broadly, our Senators and Representatives should only support a measure if it:
• strengthens families and communities.
• safeguards children and the environment they will inherit.
• offers economic opportunities so people can work their way to a brighter future.
• allows broad access to affordable healthcare.
• protects immigration, which benefits and binds all Americans.
• recognizes that sudden trauma means that sometimes we all may need a hand to recover.
• builds democracy and a safer world.
Democrats votes will be critical. We urge our representatives to support the measures in the bill that strengthen communities, promote fairness, and protect democracy.
