BACKGROUND:
What does $775.00 buy? It can pay for a night in a deluxe room at Trump’s DC hotel and three nice meals. Or it can go per day, per person, to a detention camp for refugees. For a few feet of space on a cement floor in unsanitary conditions. With perhaps a blanket. No bed, no soap, no clean clothes. With inadequate food, clean water or medical care. With guards who make brutally racist posts on Facebook, separate young children from adult family members, and leave them in the care of slightly older children.
Running detention centers is very profitable. You and I have already paid one for-profit prison corporation, The GEO Group, $500 million for running refugee detention centers since Trump instituted “zero tolerance.” They in turn spent $2.8 million on campaign contributions and lobbying last year.
Children are still being separated from parents and family, who desperately want to care for them. They are being imprisoned in traumatic conditions that are not only physically but psychologically and developmentally damaging.
This abuse is deliberately encouraged by this administration as a deterrent to immigration, enabled by Republicans in Congress, and is an impeachable offense. It must be investigated and stopped. Call now.
