Either urge them to pass the emergency relief legislation softening the pandemic’s economic fallout or thank them for caring enough for the needs of the American people who will be harmed most by COVID-19 to have done so.
In facing the COVID-19 pandemic all of us are looking for our leaders’ reassurances they understand the problemsand have plans tominimizetheir hardships.
Trump’s Oval Office speech, however, was full of misstatements and omissions about healthcare system’s ability to manage the crisis and about the massivedisruptions to our daily lives, and fueled our panic and fears by labeling COVID-19 a “foreign virus” and calling for travel bans and cuts to payroll taxes which fund Medicare and Social Security.
Biden and Sanders, by contrast, showed themselves presidential—detailing how the government should respond.
To deal with the economic fallout, House Dems just unveiled legislation for paid sick leave, free virus testing, extending unemployment insurance. McConnell, as usual, is awaiting Trump’s response before moving forward.
Because of Trump’sinadequate response, more will get sick andsuffer financial hardships, the medical crisis will arrive faster and last longer, more will lose employment and more businesses will be pushed into bankruptcy.
We need an honest President, competent in crisis, committed tooursafety and well-being, a Congress that’ll work with him to undo Trump’s heartless policies. To get this, we must do everything we can to get out the vote.
