CONGRESS, RE-OPEN THE ACA

ACTION ONE: CALL YOUR SENATORS

SAMPLE SCRIPT FOR WYDEN AND MERKLEY:

My name is [–] and I’m a constituent from [city], Oregon [zip code]. I am calling because…
I am appalled that the Senate is on recess until April 20. Tens of millions of working people are facing the Coronavirus without health insurance. Now many have now lost their jobs as well. Congress needs to come back to work and re-open ACA enrollment so people can have insurance. Please protest loudly and repeatedly about being on recess. And please come back to work in DC, whether McConnell ends the recess or not.

ACTION THREE: WRITE LETTERS TO VOTERS FROM YOUR HOME

Organizing for the 2020 Election is going VIRTUAL!

BACKGROUND:

No one should lack health care coverage, especially during a pandemic. Yet an estimated 28 million working-aged people went into the pandemic without health insurance. Now many also don’t have a job. Without jobs, they are eligible for Medicaid; but they can’tapply until open enrollment begins in the fall. It doesn’t come online till January 2021. This must be changed.
The government should re-open ACA enrollment immediately.Health insurers have asked for it. Yet the Trump administration has decided no. Instead, it will leave tens of millions of people to face the virus without protection.
Congress must override the President immediately. But the Senate is on recess until April 20. The House recesses today. There is no one home on the Hill. This is unconscionable.
This virus is supposed to peak sometime around April 15—while Congress is on recess and Trump is playing golf (the Secret Service has placed an “emergency” order for golf carts).  By the time Congress returns, untold thousands of uninsured people will be infected and infecting others, afraid to see a doctor because they can’t afford the bills. Our leaders must do better. Congress, get back to work and do your jobs.
