BACKGROUND:
There is, as Trump claims, a great deal of criminal behavior happening at our southern border. But it is not being perpetrated by immigrant’s seeking refuge in this country. It is being perpetrated by officials of our government and directed by Trump himself.
The immigration policies of the Trump administration are crafted to make it almost impossible to obtain legal immigration and asylum in the US for those who are poor and brown. Human rights abuses make it dangerous to try.
A few of Trump’s policies and plans:
Collection of DNA samples without warrants or probable cause from all immigrants crossing the southern border for a criminal database.
Deny visas to anyone unable to provide proof of health insurance
Deny residency to anyone who ever used any public benefit.
Separate families and hold children in detention indefinitely in defiance of the Flores agreement.
Deport refugees back to places where they face persecution and violence.
Force asylum seekers to wait in often dangerous conditions for months in Mexico without resources or access to counsel.
This administration will continue to violate international and US asylum laws and the Constitution. Our MOC’s must support impeachment and remain vigilant of abuses at the border.
