BACKGROUND:
Donald Trump has committed a laundry list of impeachable offenses and continues to do so on a daily basis. There is sufficient evidence even in the redacted version of the Mueller report alone to justify impeachment hearings in Congress.
If Congress declines to begin impeachment hearings, they are putting political fears above fears for the survival of rule of law in this country.
Trump has hired an Attorney General who is acting as his personal lawyer rather than the country’s independent top law enforcement official. He is using him to not only cover up his crimes but to threaten his political enemies.
Trump has stated that he will fight all subpoenas. Clearly he will continue to obstruct all investigations into his actions. Obtaining testimony and documents through the courts will be a long process. He doubtlessly hopes that his stonewalling will cause delays that will continue through the upcoming elections and outlast the public’s attention.
But subpoenas can’t be ignored in an impeachment trial. The evidence would be laid out in public. Every lawmaker would have to stand up before the American people and history, and show where their true interests lie.
