INCO WEEKLY NEWSLETTER 1/1

Best wishes to you for 2018! We look forward to being Indivisible with you!
-- Deb and Laurie
Dear Indivisibles,
I think the ante is about to be upped, and it will call upon every bit of determination (and imagination!) that we can muster. I'm sincerely grateful for the structure of Indivisible, and the brave, dedicated people who fill its ranks.  We can't turn away from the challenges ahead, but neither can we fully appreciate how formidable they might be.

What to expect when Congress gets back in January
Congress will have a full plate when it gets back to DC. The Senate is expected to return on January 3, and the House on January 8.

What Will Happen:
•  Congress will have to fund the government again.
•  Democrats have another chance to protect DACA and Dreamers.
•  Trump will unveil an “infrastructure plan.”
•  The issue of surveillance and privacy will continue to loom.
What Could/Should Happen:
•
All patriotic Americans in Congress and the administration should ensure that the Mueller investigation continues unhindered
•  Congress should fund CHIP - health insurance for 9 million children

•  Democrats should force a vote to restore net neutrality.
•  Congress should fund $180 billion for disaster relief/rebuilding in Texas, Florida, Puerto Rico (where Americans lack power/clean water/healthcare), the Northwest after wildfires
•  Democrats should stop the GOP's assault on Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid

Excerpts of wisdom and warnings from
ON TYRANNY: TWENTY LESSONS FROM THE TWENTIETH CENTURY
by Timothy Snyder, Tim Duggan Books, 2017

Lesson 10. Believe in truth. To abandon facts is to abandon freedom.... Post-truth is pre-fascism.
Lesson 11.  Investigate. Figure things out for yourself.
Lesson 12. Make eye contact and small talk. Having old friends is the politics of last resort. And making new ones is the first step toward change.

Hope has two lovely daughters,

Anger so that what must not be

and courage so that what can be
