Once again, we collectively mourn after yet another mass shooting. This time, it was Las Vegas. This time, 58 people were murdered and 500 wounded, forging a new record. http://abcn.ws/2xUWfEv
In Las Vegas – as with most shootings – the sound of gunfire alerted people to the shooter, offering the chance to flee. Yet Congress is considering legislation that would make it easier for convicted felons, domestic abusers, and others to access gun silencers – accessories whose only purpose is to muffle the sound of gunshots. The legislation is called the “Hearing Protection Act” (yes, really) and it’s part of a larger package called the SHARE Act. (http://bit.ly/2ykpXEh)
It’s backed by the gun lobby, which stands to profit significantly. By their prediction, the gun silencer industry would multiply 10 times if this bill passes. http://bit.ly/2h4OJx7
Congressmen DeFazio and Walden are both co-sponsors of the bill.
The vote was put on hold yesterday, but the GOP will likely bring it back once attention has subsided. We can’t let this slip under the radar. http://wapo.st/2xXuFpR
Our Representatives work for us, not the gun lobby. We must let them know where we stand on gun silencers. And that we will remember their vote.

“My name is [--] and I’m a constituent from [city], Oregon [zip code]. I am horrified by the most recent mass shooting, the deadliest on record. I’d like to thank Rep [name] for advocating for common sense gun laws in the past. Can I count on [him/her] to vote against the SHARE ACT, which includes a provision making it easier to purchase gun silencers?”

“My name is [--] and I’m a constituent from [city], Oregon [zip code]. I am horrified by the mass shooting in Las Vegas – the deadliest in U.S. history. The House may consider a provision in the SHARE Act that makes it easy for dangerous people to acquire silencers for their guns. This is NOT the time to weaken our existing gun laws. I’m asking the Congressman to demand the gun silencer provision is removed from the SHARE Act, or he votes against it. Thank you.”

“My name is [--] and I’m a constituent from [city], Oregon [zip code]. I am horrified by the mass shooting in Las Vegas – the most deadly in U.S. history. I am disappointed and appalled that the Congressman is co-sponsor of the Hearing Protection Act, which would make it easier for dangerous people to acquire silencers for their guns. The sound of gunfire saves lives – it alerts people to a shooting and gives them opportunity to flee. I am asking the Congressman to pull his sponsorship and vote against the Hearing Protection Act. We will remember his decision and his vote.”
