Trump is playing with fire by threatening nuclear war against North Korea and decertifying Iran’s compliance with the 2015 nuclear treaty. Congress can limit the President’s belligerence by reasserting its constitutional powers, and supporting the Iran deal.
Congress must:

• Pass the Markey-Lieu bill to prevent the President from using nuclear weapons first unless Congress has declared war (HR 669 and S 200). Oregon’s Senators and three of its House members (Blumenauer, Bonamici, and DeFazio) are co-sponsors; now they need to push for its passage.

• Not respond to Trump’s de-certification of Iran. Without congressional action, the deal stands and decertification becomes largely a symbolic act. If Congress sanctions Iran, the chance of war with Iran and North Korea rises. Iran, North Korea, and the world will lose faith in American diplomacy.

• Sunset the 2001 Authorization for the Use of Military Force (AUMF). The law’s vagueness has been used to justify 37 military operations in 14 countries. New military action must have a new AUMF.

We need Congress to guard our national security. Ask our MoCs to keep us safe by supporting the Iran deal with no new sanctions and by placing checks on Presidential powers to start wars.
