This is not a drill. Your calls are critically needed right now. Our Democratic senators MUST hear from us.
Republicans are sending a devastating health care bill through the Senate without hearings, input from Committees, or a Congressional Budget Office (CBO) score---and without releasing a bill until the last minute. If we don’t act now, more than 23 million Americans may lose their health care---among them our most vulnerable Oregonians.
There are two strategies Senators Wyden and Merkley can use to slow this process down:
• Withhold unanimous consent. The Senate typically seeks waivers from certain procedural rules, including shortening the time for debates, expediting amendments and scheduling committees. Our Senators can withhold consent on these procedural rules and slow the Senate’s business to a crawl. Senators are using this tactic Monday to demand seeing the bill. http://cnn.it/2sHXDbh.
• Filibuster by amendment. Republicans are attempting to jam health care through the budget reconciliation process where they need only 50 votes. Under reconciliation, each Senator can file an unlimited number of amendments (once we have a bill) as possible and then call them up for a vote on the Senate floor during a period called “vote-a-rama”. Our Senators should propose as many as possible---hundreds---and keep them going until there are meaningful hearings on the bill.
