BACKGROUND:
Recent disclosures of Russia’s ongoing 2020 election interference should terrify us all.
- Head of DNI (Director of National Intelligence) election security unit warned House lawmakers it’s trying to sow dissension among Dems with the ultimate goal of getting Trump re-elected
- Rather than simply impersonating Americans, as done in 2016, it’s manipulating Americans to repeat disinformation from servers located here
What terrified Trump was not the briefing’s substance but its disclosure to Congress, and he responded by immediately replacing top DNI officials with unqualified loyalists.
- New Director, Richard Grenell, is former FOX commentator with no intelligence experience who previously worked for Eastern European oligarch banned from U.S for corruption
- New deputy, Kashyap Patel, is ex-Nunes aide who authored memo discrediting investigation of Russia’s 2016 meddling
Grenell’s already sought access to intelligence agencies’ information Trump would love to use against his “enemies.” And Trump’s purges will discourage future sharing of Russian interference with Congress.
GOP Senators claimed that outcome of November election, not Senate, should determine Trump’s future, but these developments call into question the election’s integrity.
We cannot allow Trump to abet Moscow’s attack on our national security via election meddling. To ensure election integrity, we and Congress must act.
