BACKGROUND:
Trump’s GOP failed to hold him accountable. Their message was received, and Trump’s abuse power and attempt to undermine the 2020 election immediately escalated.
Trump illegally retaliated against witnesses, Mitt Romney – the GOP juror who voted for conviction, and sanctuary cities.
- Barr announced DOJ investigations of political candidates must be approved by him. This allows Barr to block investigations of Trump and to receive information from Guiliani’s Ukrainian, Russian, and other international contacts and presumably others about Trump’s political opponents.
- Although Treasury refused to send Trump’s taxes to the House as required by law, information about Hunter Biden was sent to the Senate.
- OMB withheld money legislated for clean energy.
- Trump changed the security status of Customs and Border Patrol to deny the public information about its activities.
- Trump threatened to fire the Inspector General of the Intelligence Community (ICIG) and threatened retaliation against Democrats.
None of this is legal. All of it represents the consolidation of power and lawlessness typical of authoritarianism.
We must continue investigating Trump’s illegal and corrupt acts that have come to light since the Articles of Impeachment were filed. We must continue to pressure the Senate to pass the election security legislation already passed by the House. We must hold Trump and his GOP accountable.
