STOP OFFSHORE DRILLING – PROTECT OUR COASTS

#ProtectOurCoasts
#OffshoreDrilling

The Trump administration has put virtually all of America's coastlines on the auction block by opening them to offshore drilling. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management proposals include 47 leases covering 98% of US waters – over a billion previously protected acres.

They are rescinding safety regulations enacted to prevent another Deepwater Horizon disaster.  The destruction caused by a major oil spill is obviously devastating.  But so is the continual degradation of habitat and injury caused by frequent if smaller leaks from drilling, tankers and underwater pipelines, as well as seismic air gun blasts used in exploration.

The economic and environmental health of coastal states is threatened.  In Oregon alone, a $2 billion local economy and 22,000 jobs dependent on coastal fishing and tourism are at risk.  So is the health of our fragile marine ecosystems and wildlife.

This decision was enacted with no public input.  At so-called "open houses" local citizens were not allowed to speak.  In response, thousands of protesters have rallied across the country, including hundreds in Salem.

We must all make our voices heard.  Tell Congress they must not allow the health of our oceans and beaches to be sold away to the oil industry.
