Please celebrate the birth of our country by doing whatever you can to defend our democracy from those, foreign and domestic, who would destroy it.

THE SUPREME COURT CHANGES OUR COUNTRY
"Today’s Supreme Court, packed as it has been by right-wing money behind the Federalist Society and that society’s leader, Leonard Leo, is taking upon itself power over the federal government and the state governments to recreate the world that existed before the New Deal."

An excellent New Yorker podcast, "The Dark-Money Supreme Court," features three of the magazine's best staff writers discussing last week's reactionary Supreme Court decisions. "(This)
political roundtable looks at the Supreme Court’s conservative tilt as another term concludes, this one marked by ethics scandals and landmark rulings. With Susan B. Glasser, Jane Mayer, and Evan Osnos"

"I am more deeply troubled by the cases’ tortured legal reasonings, which in the service of an apparent political agenda upend decades of established precedent and grant the Court an astonishing amount of power," writes Jay Kuo, an attorney and board member of Human Rights Campaign, about the implications of these rulings in his newsletter, Status Kuo. WORTH READING!

Acclaimed attorney Neal Katyal explains the basics about the US Supreme Court by answering five questions from fellow attorney Joyce Vance.

"PATRIOTIC DEFIANCE"

"As Americans, we have a charge to keep, a beacon to keep alight, especially now, as minoritarian tyranny has taken hold of our institutions. It is systematically dismantling the scaffolding from which we built our democracy, without any clear sense of what will replace it. For some, perhaps, the objective is not to replace it at all.

"In this new era of deconstruction, we must summon renewed fortitude, resilience and vigilance, with reverence for those who came before us and resolve for those who follow. This will require patriotic defiance, with respect for the rule of law but with fidelity to the ideals that precede it.

"With hope, let us rejoin and rebuild, until America is America and the unfinished is complete."

STAMP PRICE HIKE
Prices of postage stamps are going up AGAIN (Is DeJoy literally glued to his seat as Postmaster General or what!) as of this July 9. Postcards will be three cents more, as will first class letters. If you're planning to write postcards or letters to voters for various campaigns in this next year and would just as soon not pay any more than necessary, buy them now.
COMMON SENSE
“A government of our own is our natural right: And when a man seriously reflects on the precariousness of human affairs, he will become convinced, that it is infinitely wiser and safer, to form a constitution of our own in a cool deliberate manner, while we have it in our power, than to trust such an interesting event to time and chance. If we omit it now, some [dictator] may hereafter arise, who laying hold of popular disquietudes, may collect together the desperate and the discontented, and by assuming to themselves the powers of government, may sweep away the liberties of the continent like a deluge.”
--Thomas Paine, from his pamphlet, "Common Sense," 1776
