A CURIOUS CONTRAST
"In a curious contrast to authoritarian regimes’ attempts to impose a façade of electoral credibility, leaders who fear losing power in a democratic system have taken to sowing distrust in elections."
-- Freedom House

"It's not Republican voters who elect Republican politicians.
It’s Democratic voters who stay home that elect Republicans . . . ."

TRUMP 2.0 AND PROJECT 2025
Check out these highlights of the recent Time magazine cover story and interview with Trump, summarized by Joyce Vance in Civil Discourse
"Trump would permit red states with restrictive abortion laws to monitor women’s pregnancies and prosecute those who violate bans. Have you seen the ad with two young women in a car trying to escape Alabama to get medical care, only to be stopped by law enforcement as they approach the border? That’s Trump 2.0."

"Trump would consider pardoning the people involved in the January 6 attack on the Capitol, including more than 800 who have pled guilty or been convicted. Among them are members of the Oath Keepers and Proud Boys, who were convicted of seditious conspiracy."

"Trump won’t commit to aiding an attacked ally in Europe or Asia if he thinks that country isn’t paying enough for its own defense."

Trump has adopted the GOP's Project 2025  -- or more likely, the Project 2025 leaders and funders have adopted Trump. You're familiar with some of their policies already: Think 1984Brave New World, and The Handmaid's Tale. Think authoritarian regimes around the world, including Iran, China, Russia, North Korea, Syria, and others.

THE GOP VS. AMERICANS
"Republicans are engaged in the process of dismantling the federal government, working to get rid of its regulation of business, basic social welfare laws and the taxes needed to pay for such measures, the promotion of infrastructure, and the protection of civil rights. To do so, they have increasingly argued that the states, rather than the federal government, are the centerpiece of our democratic system.
....
"Vice President Kamala Harris was in Jacksonville, Florida, today to talk about reproductive rights. She put the fight over abortion in the larger context of the discriminatory state laws that have, historically, constructed a world in which some people have more rights than others. “This is a fight for freedom,” she said, “the fundamental freedom to make decisions about one’s own body and not have their government tell them what they’re supposed to do.”"
-- Heather Cox Richardson,
Letters from an American, May 1, 2024
