THE POST OFFICE IS A LIFELINE THAT CONGRESS MUST PROTECT

ACTION ONE: CALL YOUR SENATORS

SAMPLE SCRIPT FOR WYDEN AND MERKLEY:

My name is [–] and I’m a constituent from [city], Oregon [zip code]. I am calling because…

Particularly during this pandemic, the Postal Service is a lifeline for all Americans especially those who are rural, low income, older, or disabled.  It is also the safest way for us to vote.  I am asking the Senator to demand the protection of the USPS and to vote against a HEROES act that has been gutted by Senate Republicans.  A bad bill is worse than no bill.

ACTION TWO: CALL YOUR HOUSE REPS

Not sure who your U.S. Representative is? Find out here.

For Blumenauer, Bonamici, DeFazio, and Schrader

Particularly during this pandemic, the Postal Service is a lifeline for all Americans especially those who are rural, low income, older, or disabled.  It is also the safest way for us to vote.  I am asking the representative to demand the protection of the USPS and insist that his/her colleagues in the Senate vote against a HEROES act that has been gutted by Senate Republicans.  A bad bill is worse than no bill.

For Walden:

Particularly during this pandemic, the Postal Service is a lifeline for all Americans especially those who are rural, low income, older, or disabled.  It is also the safest way for us to vote.  I am asking the representative to put country over party and demand the protection of the USPS and insist that his colleagues in the Senate vote against a HEROES act that has been gutted by Senate Republicans.  A bad bill is worse than no bill.

BACKGROUND:

The Postal Service connects all of us and is a lifeline for all Americans and our democracy.  During this pandemic that lifeline is even more vital, and it’s being threatened for political gain and greed.

For millions of Americans, particularly those who are low income, older, disabled or rural, the USPS is irreplaceable for the reliable, affordable delivery of vital basic needs including life-saving medication.

Voting by mail is the safe and reliable way to vote during a pandemic. Trump, afraid of losing the election, is seeking to damage the USPS as a means of voter suppression.

Trump’s Postmaster General is purposefully causing delays in mail delivery.  Mnuchin has refused to release $10 billion in loans from the first relief package.  Trump’s efforts are supported by Republicans who have sought to privatize mail delivery for decades and have legislated the Post Office into near bankruptcy.

The cost of the destruction of the USPS and corporatization of mail delivery would fall most heavily on those least able to afford it.

Our representatives must not support a gutted HEROES act.  A bad bill is worse than no bill, and any bill must include the full $25 billion in relief for the USPS.
